I don't remember that the key was necessary to be able to install it... What interface are you going to use and with what vehicles? Why do you want that version and not something more current?

From memory I would have said the same but had a look at an old guide and it installs star utilities first, enters a licence and only after that runs the installation from DVD1. This does not prove that a licence is needed in advance but this is the way we must have done it in the past?

I do it. First install all driver past, newguide2j wps past prepare.bat here restart pc remove from owner account password to star account. Next I see on pulpit star untitled, in start key enter new keys, but I open dvd and Setup, Klick 2x next is preparing and error.

To install you need to change the setup.inx file to iso or use the appid250 trick.

I dont think that I am stealing the thread if i ask a question on this version, however on my install i must have run into a time out issue as DAS Xentry will not start and appears the key dates have run out
Does anyone know if there is a time out fix for this version or can anyone suggest the correct procedure for adding a new key

No timeout for the actual SW. There is a risk that the times.properties files get deleted if the laptop time is changed backwards. If however Xentry only gives the expired licence fault message, you only need to save a new licence. For Xentry better to first delete the old licence file (lic_key_2.dat).
