has anyone got this working and tested with a VCM please?

Yes. 10000000 cheers to Extradry for the instructions.
I used VMware just so if it didnt work it was easy to re-do.
Installed per instructions in VMware and connected my VCM1. It asked to update firmware, i denied. I was able to select programming on a 2003 F250.
Very happy!
