RE: Windows XP VMware with BMW Standard Tools 2.12 and SP-daten v56
@ ludikure - The problem was that I had nothing else connected and COM1 was listed as "in use".

Now it's ok but I can't connect to the car, it gives me an error that there is no response from the control unit when I select my engine, M57TU2 . I see the ingnition and battery circles as being black.

I also used the Carly v19 VM (also found here on cartechnology) and with this, I can connect and scan the car.

Edit: I will try to reinstall the driver for the k+dcan interface since I believe that my cable is different than yours (transparent with white board).

I am not sure if it is the cable issue since you can establish a connection with the car. I have only used this set of tools on E60 530I, but not the diesel model like you have. I think that it could be the issue with missing or outdated daten files for the type of ECU you have. What happens when select "Functional Jobs"?

Well, that's the problem. I assume that it connection is ok because the cable led blinks. So far, I couldn't read anything from the car.

I tried to connect to the engine, by selecting it from INPA, problem is that I get an error, IFH-0009, if my memory serves me right.

Are your 7 and 8 pins connected? I have a switch on the cable, tried it both ways and still nothing.

Mine are not connected, but I have 335i, and it also worked on my friend's 530I.

If the other guy's VMware works for you, I doubt that the cable is the issue.

I used below post as reference for creating the VM. According to section "Known Limitations" in the post, M57 engine is not supported by this installation of BMW ST.

There is a fault in the vmware. Instead of adding c:\ediabas\bin to the path,it is also added to the tmp and temp location. These locations are also in the screen of environment variables where you can change the path. Because of this, some programs wont install. Just a tip from flip

Can you please be more specific because I am not sure what you mean by "some programs won't install"? I am do not remember if it was I who added c:\ediabas\bin to tmp and temp or OS added it automatically after I added it to path.

The os wont change these paths of temp and tmp locations. I had a fault when i installed special cic utility. The programs that use the temp map to install, and i think the most programs will, they will probably fail.

The rest of the vmware is super and saves us a lot of work!!

Okay, so you are talking about additional programs you installed, and not any of BMW standard tools utilities installed on vm.
