XZBMW  2001 E46 320d with M47 engine does not start
Hello,

I have a case of 2001 E46 320d with M47 engine (not TU). It cranks ok, all sensors (including MAF, crankshaft, rpm within injection pump) seems to be operating normally and their values are reasonable at cranking speed. The only thing is that start of injection angle is 0, but in BMW documentation I read that its not regulated while starter is engaged. So not sure if its wrong. No error codes in the car related to this - the only code is siren open circuit.

Any ideas what can be causing this?

The problem is intermittent. Sometimes it starts without a problem and drives perfectly up to a minute and then dies suddenly. Pump in the tank is ok, fuel filter is not clogged.

RE: 2001 E46 320d with M47 engine does not start
It sounds like the all known VP44 injection pump is broken or an injector is hanging.
Try with some start helping spray or brake cleaner spraying in the airintake AFTER the turbo, if the car now starts it is in most cases one these 2 faults.

RE: 2001 E46 320d with M47 engine does not start
Thanks. I removed intake manifold and disconnected high pressure lines to the injectors. Seems like the pump does not create any noticeable pressure as if I plug the line with a finger, I only feel slight pulsation of the diesel. If I remove the finger, and leave line open, if pumps out noticeable amount of diesel. Can it be fault in electrical pressure regulator valve/computer or do you think its something mechanical? Somehow due to somewhat intermittent nature of the fault I would think it should be something electrical like that valve?

I had the same engine and in my car the pump was out of order 2 times. The first one I built in was an none OEM and the last one was an original and that one worked till I sold the car.

Doesn't have this car 2 electrical fuel pumps?
1 in the tank and 1 inline under the car? many times the inline pumps fails intermittend...

As I said its not TU engine so its not common rail and therefore does not have inline fuel pump. Tank pump works perfectly.
