XZBMW  BMW ICOM A2 - Build power supply with OBD connector?
Hello folks!

I want to be able to firmware update and configure my BMW ICOM A2 clone from home and not plug it into the OBD port in my car every time I want to use it.
Therefor I'v got some questions on how to build a Power supply for the ICOM.

As I'v seen on different forums/articles there is a way to power the ICOM A2 by building a custom OBD2 female connector with plug to cigarette socket into a battery charger or similar.

1. I do have a charger at home that supplies 3 amps with an 12v cigarette socket and my question is how do I build the cable itself?

2. Can I buy a OBD2 female connector with open wires on the other side + a cigarette plug male and then solder the wires that are supplying power to the OBD2 onto the socket itself?

3. What pins on the OBD female does the ICOM A2 need to get current from in order to function for firmware flashing for example?

4. I also read somewhere about someone making a custom "power supply cable" from ICOM by modifying an 20-pin E36-E39 OBD2 adapter by soldering a few pins together and connecting wires to an external 12v source. Is this possible? I actually have a few 20-pin/OBD2 connectors lying around at home.

5. Last question: How much voltage and current will the ICOM A2 need in order to operate properly with this method? I don't want any surprises with my unit if it draws 10 amps at a certain point of flashing, resulting in a bricked or defective device.. Will standard 12.0v and 3A be enough for this?

Picture of the OBD2 female cable with open ends that I mentioned:

ICOM A2 is a bad choice for this.... A1 is better for power interruptions
Best way "I" would do it, buy OBDII Extention, Go to your local salvage place and buy BMW OBDII+20_Pin plug+wires(cut)
Then buy power plugs(male and female) from your local electric store and DIY your final product to this forum how much it cost you at the end

That's how I do it, a cut BMW OBD port female end, and header pins soldered to the pigtail end to connect to power source.

You can use a laptop power adapter to be your source of power, make sure output is 12v. Good luck
