Will somebody please explain all these Ediabas, OBD.ini, ENET, KDCAN, ICOM interfaces
I am trying to get to grips with all these confusing technologies. If you recall, one car (F10) crashed while I was trying to update it with ISTAP. A good member here brought it back to life, thanks to him again. A forensic examination of my laptop seemed to reveal a malfunctioning OS and related communication drivers. So upgraded to windows 10, reinstalled ISTA+, ISTAP, INPA, NCSExpert, Tools32 and BMW coding tool.

Connected to my car (F10) and ENET, KDCAN would not connect to car. Some fault about car not found. ICOM Connected perfectly.

An hour or two later on another F10 the ENET cable connect flawlessly, I had not touched anything since the last trial on my car!!! An hour later, KDCAN connects flawlessly to and E60. I am stumped. I am yet to find time to retry my car.

My question is,

1. Do ENET, KDCAN and ICOM use Ediabas? If yes do they need OBD.ini?
2. When using the three, how come we don't need to always change ODB.ini (Or ediabas interface) interface between USB,ENET and OBD
3. It seems there are two communication protocols in these cars, CAN and Ethernet. is that why ENET can only use Ethernet and KDCAN can only communicate via USB?

Lastly I have seen some interface tool to change between ENET, DCAN and ICOM. I cant find it though. How useful is it? Who can led me to a copy of it.

What exactly is the purpose of the line in OBD.ini for hardware "Hardware=OBD" and a more or less similar configuration line in Ediaba that reads "Interface= STD:OBD"?

I am as confused as hellsad

RE: Will somebody please explain all these Ediabas, OBD.ini, ENET, KDCAN, ICOM interfaces
Ediabas js essential. Everytime you switch interfaces you need to make modification in the ediabas.ini file.
Interface
K+DCAN = STD:OBD
Enet = Enet
Icom = Remote
For icon you also need to specify the ip address in TCP->Remote host = Ip pf the icom

But when you have easy connect it does that for you. As far as i know obd.in doesn't require and changes except when hooking a k+dcan interface where you need to specify the com port in the obd.ini.

Here is the link for Easy connect shared by another member on the forum.

Hi, as far as I am aware you need Enet for F Series and K+DCan for E series. I don’t believe the K+DCan interface works on an F10.

K+DCAN works on F chassis as well. It's just slower, much slower. It just goes into the junction box or gateway and from there the signals are converted/translated.

(genuine) ICOM has all: L-Line, K-Line, CANBUS low and high speed (part of the 'DCAN'), Ethernet, and the addon MOST fiber optic connector.

ICOM generally chooses which protocol to communicate with, unless you force it on something else.

This rings true. I can now use all interfaces on my car. One more question though. I have never had to change the TCP settings when using the ICOM (or anything else) for ISTA and Esys and it has worked flawlessly for diagnosis. One attempt at programming ended in disaster.

It appears that to use it for certain tools like INPA the TCP settings must be changed and ICOM reserved (I can connect Esys after reserving but never ever changed TCP settings, it has always remained 192.168.68.40, whose IP address is this anyway?). Anyone know why this is so?
