When you‘re cheap enough hear to people how now from what they speak.
When you follow a hand full of threads in forums you can see there are enough people where buy expensive cars and want to save up money for diagnostic equipment.

500€ is nothing for a good tool.

It‘s not our bricked car. It is yours.
He can flash the whole car at BMW dealer for far less than that and with practically zero risk, so it kind of beats the purpose. Or he can do it at an "expert" like the many on the forum, with some risk, but for even less money.
In my country (East Europe) one BMW dealer would flash a whole car for under 50 euros. Paying 500 for only an ICOM is plain ridiculous weather you
own the newest M5 or just an E87 116i.

50€?

In Germany you become an 5 minute diagnostic (fault memory read) for 40€.

I-Step-Update with charging the battery are minimum 150€.

You are very very wrong my friend, if navigation one something else going wrong, you have to buy new modul, because old one was broken or you drive away with broken modul.

I know many real stories, for example bring 3-4 E60 with CCC for firmware update wink and than look whats happend rofl

I totally agree.

The risk for broken ECUs is not by the dealer. The risk is on YOUR side.

I hear from a lot damaged CCC, CIC, CAS, FRM, FEM at the dealer update.
He has no godmode from ISTA-P or ISTA-D.

But twice, for all we can only prefer.
500€ is nothing for an tool. Maybe you need it after the dealer crashes your CAS, nobody knows it before.

RE: I-Step Update Ready to Go?
So some of you are saying that if I take my car to an official BMW dealer and ask them to do the update, and during the update something goes wrong, me, the customer would be responsible for paying for replacement modules?!?!?!?!?

I find that extremely difficult to believe. If BMW makes a mistake, or one of the modules fails during update, it's down to them to sort it out!

Different nations may have different rules, but here in the UK, there is no way BMW would ask for the customer to pay for an issue arising from work done by themselves under warranty.

RE: I-Step Update Ready to Go?
If your car in under warranty, then its BMWs problem. If not - yours. Simple.

If module update failed, that means the module was defective. Not dealers problem, dealer just proposes to replace it for you. Now if you brick your car under warranty, that's also your problem.

XZBMW  RE: I-Step Update Ready to Go?
Just to chime in....

We update many cars on a daily basis and a module failure is pretty rare these days. I remember cip on e65 where 4 or 5 modules would need to be replaced!

Do you have a specific reason for carrying out the update? Aside from learning?

Might also be an idea to check if there any quality enhancements outstanding on your vehicle which would cover the update.

Just my thoughts...

RE: I-Step Update Ready to Go?
@DoZZa

It makes a difference if the update is necessary or not.
If necessary, because, for example, your BMW had a defect. Then BMW replaces a defective control unit.

But if you want an update just like that, then the dealer says you are doing it at your own risk. so no warranty.

I've already made 3 times an update at a BMW dealer in Germany. And every time, the dealer said it was on my own risk.

at my dealer in Germany costs an update 85 €
