Let me first tell you what I'm after:

The ability to use ODIS engineering for offline flashing of module A5, and uploading a new dataset. This is most likely a one time use for my car (Skoda Superb 2016). I can't find anybody local to me (south of Sweden) who could help me out and has equipment so I decided to get the hardware myself.

There are many similar topics, but not really any for 5054a recently.

I only care about stability, so all wireless options are out. USB seems to be the only way and 5054a seems to be the most tested and least gambly.

Looking at ali-express, what I can find now are some red. pcb versions, they seem quite honest, have the right chips and are quite pricy. There is a certain brand called Eketool which looks alright, and they also have a USB-only version, that is a little bit cheaper - but I'm worried that this might not work - as it's not a replica of the real hardware. They also ship from Europe which is great.

Any points on how to spot a good interface in 2023? If you have any experience from flashing with one recently bought - please PM me.

That clone is one of the biggest loterry these days and i would not advice it when you can use a 12$ cable as a passthru interface and maybe do the job.




P.S. Read in some other forum that EKE.... is just a fake google a little.

This is certainly interesting. Glad I asked. On the topic on a passthrough device - what the drawbacks? And what should I consider when getting one so that “maybe get the job done” gets more like a “probably gets the job done”?

One well known limitation is the detection of ignition in the program.
Since you did not say what you want to update exactly then no one can answer you more precise then this.

PassThru devices are unstable, very slow and with limitations.
For example, a flash that takes 5min with 5054A will take 20min with a PassThru.
This is for the PassThru devices that can do flash, because not all can flash.

And, when you flash slow the risk of something going wrong increases significally.

A 5054a clone with Odis E 12.2 is ok for this.

This is the conclusion I came to, as a passthrough device which takes a long time to flash - increases the risk for failure.

So let's circle back to the beginning! How can I find a trustworthy clone?

There is no such thing.
If you want trustworthy, all need PCB rework.
If not, it’s all a riddle, can last 5 days or 5 years.
