Activated, yes. I too had some issues, but it did get activated, and I confirm it is indeed working, even with a cheap ebay cable.
1. First go to options, choose your COM port, hook it up to the car, turn on contact, then press test, and save the config.
2. Close the program.
3. Open it again and press Auto-Scan, choose your car make/model and press start. Wait until it finishes, then press close.
4. After that go to "About", there it should say your serial number and Fully Registered / Activated
If it fails, try repeating from step 2. again, it may be required that you open About section a few times before it generates your serial number.

Many thanks, it works absolutely fine and yes it is a registered VCDS Lite 1.2. I have checked in "about" and it's shown as a registered version and it does throttle body adaptation etc... when I tried to do throttle body adaptation with free ross-tech version of the vcds lite 1.2 it won't let me unless I paid them for registration 90dollars or something like that, so yes this is working VCDS 1.2 Lite version. I am using simple and cheap BMW INPA DIS cable (FTDI232 CHIP inside/blue cable from China around 8eur) which works on VAGs as well.
To install it just follow the simple instructions described in this thread by other members and it should work fine.

I used this on a laptop with no junk installed and it worked perfect.
