ICOM interfaces, which one? - carlosabh71 - 09-03-2019

IHi there!  I own a BMW C650 bike, I want to buy an ICOM interface but there are so many options that I just don’t know which one ( ICOM A2, A2 wifi, Next, Next wifi, and what appear to be the newest ICOM P)  I want to buy a Chinese clone because don’t want to expend to much on it but I’ve read there are some good ones and others not so good , which one you recommend and where to buy it? A good one for diy work
Thank you so much for your help

For motorcycle you need ICOM A which is the main multiplexer unit, and also ICOM D, which connects to the bike diagnostic port.

You can buy the ICOM Next clones, the ones that say wifi just comes with a wifi dongle to it, no need for that.

Better buy genuine ICOM Next A. It will be actual for next 5-10 years. ICOM A1 or A2 support can come to an end very soon.

Well it depends. Original next can be twice the price of clone. And it depends on the scope of his work. If he runs a shop. Yes but original. If for private use. Buy clone.

You can either try to find used one next or A2. If the price would be similiar, it's much better to take original used one than new Chinese clone. I bought mine used original A2 for about 350$, so it's a chance you'll find that too.

I used to have a ICOM a2 clone, bought for around 300 euros, but the very first time i was trying to software update a E87 lci using ISTA/P it ended up failing.
Afterwards i bought a new genuine ICOM Next A for 550 euros instead, and have never had a single problem since then.

Icom A2 is fine as long as it is geniune.. But Next is just quicker for flashing and more up to date with G series and for the future. idea

the Next is better for future vehicles

My opinion is simple!

If hobby repair or just your own error scanning is your goal, then I think enough the ISTA-D (without programming function e.g. standalone) with an OBD D-CAN interface and cable adapter to round 10 pin connector.
But if you need coding or programming, then it's not a hobby level!
I say this because the motorcycle is not a game. ;o)
Then buy a ICOM-A and ICOM-D if you can use it.
