GM gearbox replace with ZF - Matthew53 - 14-08-2019

Hi,
I would like to buy E90 328i N51 2007 US market in attractive price, but there are two problems.

Head gasket is leaking or the head is broken, but I will handle it.

Second problem is more complex. There is one fault in gearbox: "5720 EGS: Power supply, external solenoid valves: too low". I fully charged the battery and left disconnected for a night, but the fault is still present (car stay on my friend yard so I have options to do such actions)

I couldn't test the car completly while driving, because I do not want to make it worse. Only drive for about 2 minutes. It looks like it switch the gears correctly.

Ista suggested to replace mechatronics, but I asked a friend of mine who is handling the gearbox repairs and he said it might be senor in gearbox selector or corrupted gearbox ecu, not neceasarily mechatronics.

This is originally GM gearbox GA6L45R and it's very complicated to get the same one or repair it in Poland.

That's why I would like to (in the worst case, just want to be prepared for that) replace it with ZF, but how it will be about DME? If I replace DME which works with ZF gearbox, then I could put ZF gearbox and programm it or it's not as easy as that?

Thanks for any advices.

You would need to change the vin to match a car with ZF gearbox, DME is standard across I think and even if it is not you just need to flash the zusb. Pinout for dme is standard, even EGS pinout may be standard. Only thing I think is that you may need to alter vin so that programming tools can pick right datens for ZF and DME when coding or programming? Not sure. This will be interesting...
