CanClip: Automatic Detected has Failed - sjdean - 28-10-2019

As per subject, my CanClip. seemingly 9 times out of 10 (if not 99 times out of 100) is showing "AUTOMATIC IDENTIFICATION HAS FAILED, ENTER THE VIN CODE MANUALLY".

Im not sure what the problem is.

An OBD reader reads VIN just fine, so it doesn't appear to be a wiring issue to the OBD socket or other car problem. And yet, it doesn't seem to be a problem with the CanClip as it used to connect to my old car just fine. Although I could say it's getting worse, so may just be coincidence that it started happening when I got a new car.

Has anyone had this before?

Thanks

From what car are you trying to read the VIN?
I have faced same problems when one or few computers in car has been replaced from other donor car.
Also I need to manualy instert VIN for Espace 3 and older models.

It's a Renault Laguna 3 (2009). It wouldn't surprise me if it's had a donor computer. There's a few things in the programming which looks questionnable. It thinks it has Daytime Running Lights, which it definitely doesn't.

It's just rather curious that it will connect one time in ten. As a computer programmer, I know it should either never connect, or it should always connect.

Hmm weird. I deffinetly agree with you what you've said that it shoudl either never connect or always connect.
What about a fresh installation on a new computer? I have also faced a problem with fake RLT sonde that had a bad connection and sometimes did connect, sometimes it didnt.
You can also check VIN numbers in clip of every computer in car. This is the easyest way to see if one or more computers were replaced.

I took my clip apart, took a look at all the joints that I could see, magnified them with a photo on the phone, couldn't see any issues, everything looked fine, used a bit of compressed air, a few bits of stuff came out like metal shavings, reassembled, and, it works fine now.

I've even programmed my TPMS sensors smile
