hi,
is there a way to install ista onto an external ssd? I want to install it via ista launcher.
or is it just possible to move all folders and create links?

install it on internal ssd.... if you install it on External hard drive ..program will be very slow.

i have a real install on my laptop. but i have a surface tablet that i will be using on vacation, and sometimes i need to do something remote. so i thought to put everything onto an external ssd and take it on vacation. that way i don’t need to bring 2 devices and can just plug in the ssd when needed.

I have one installation on my Surface Go placed on a SD-Card, yes, it is slower, but it is usable without any problems. So, I do not see any problems with a workaround on an external drive. I would not use it for programming purposes, but for diagnosis e.g. while traveling with an old car
it works pretty good.

Did you use the standalone or a install with licnese? how did you get it onto a different drive than c:\?

You can install ISTA anywhere you want. You just have to know to install manually and change directory in registry files.
Its just unzipping files and placing them in correct directory.

You will need to change the installation path and file base paths in the registry.

So everything has to be done afterwards and not before installing via a change in the license file or admin client?
