Then you have done something wrong, my edit is spot on.
First thing you do if you have problems, write back the original and test. Then post exact mileage the original displays.

Come to think of it, if you have no experience or the tools to properly erase the eeprom, you need to replace it or it will not program properly.

I have several different tools that can erase this memory seamlessly. I service more complex electronics. I always double check what I save and compare the file so that is definitely not the problem.
