X5 G05 with MGU and ATM: GPS problem - david357 - 13-01-2023

Hi,

I have a problem with an US spec X5 G05 from 2019:
The car has a MGU and an ATM 1 for telematics and GPS. The car has been driven in Europe for more than a year and navigation worked fine with European maps. Now there is a problem with navigation: The position of the car on the map is several hundred kilometers away from its actual position.

I checked GPS status in ATM with Tool32: Right after restarting the ATM the GPS status is „no almanac“ and the date is the actual date. A few seconds later it changes to „undefined“ (0x255) and the date changes to 01011970. A GPS status like „looking for satellites“ or „2D“ or even „3D position“ is not shown at all.
I also played around with „cold start“, „warm start“ and „hot start“ GPS but this made no difference. The „GPS antenna check“ did not give any errors.

I checked the coding of ATM and MGU, this looks all good. (The GPS was working with that coding for many months, so this should be definitely okay.)

I guess there is a hardware problem with the ATM.
Question: Can I replace the ATM with one from another car to just get GPS working again? I am aware that ConnectedDrive / telematic is not working this way but this is not important because ConnectedDrive is not working properly with an US spec car in Europe anyway…

Any thoughts, suggestion etc. are welcome - thanks!

You can do it,its possible.

as far as i know G05 has roof antenna leaking problem, so probably your ATM got some water damage, you need to change ATM, also fix the antenna leaking problem and validate your new ATM over S-Gate (it can be done for used ATMs too).

He has ATM1, I think validation is not needed.

Thank you very much for your help! Very good advise concerning the roof antenna leaking issue and the need for replacing the GPS antenna too in this case.

i have exactly the same problem after changing the MGU. any update?

Hi UP2Up,

There were no signs of a leakage problem, everything looked dry an clean.

It turned out that the ATM was defective. It was not able the receive GPS properly anymore (GPS antenna was replaced too, so this was not the problem).

However, after a while the replacement ATM (brand new part from BMW) did stop working too. GPS reception was still fine but there where ethernet errors, so it went to flight mode after a while and therefore could not report the current GPS location to the MGU. (There were no ethernet errors with the first ATM.)

ATM replaced again, now it is working fine (so far...)

Hope that helps...

Thank you very much.

thats i think what we hate about BMW. very weird recurrent issues.

strangely i have the same symptoms. i hope my ATM doesn't have the same virus smile otherwise i will replace it and see. do you still have the part number please.

I had the same issue few days ago, imported car from china, there wasn't any GPS signal, i tried different codings without success .. it worked straight away after swapping the atm.
