N43 EGR / AGR replace - sascha870 - 11-08-2023

Hello

I try soon to change the EGR / AGR valve on a 120i N43 engine, did any one of you already tackle this job ?

Is it possible to get on all screws from top ? And is it necessary to drain the radiator from coolant because there is a coolant plug on the backside of the EGR / AGR.

Thanks in advance for your help !

Best regards Sascha

I have changed it on a N43B16 engine, well i did a completely overhaul of the head, but it should be the same as the N43B20 engine.

No need to drain coolant, but some will be drained out the head after you removed the EGR valve.

What you need to do is loosen 2 bolts on the pipe comming from the exhaust, this is best to do from the underside, (actually it's best to do this with the subframe removed)
i managed to break one of the bolts doing this.

After that you will also need to loosen 2 bolts on the other side of the EGR, it's best to remove the vacum pump or maybe the intake manifold to gain acess.

the EGR valve is connected to the head with 3 hex bolts and it might be a little stuck because it is a O-ring sitting on it.

But mark my words, i did this with the head out of the car, this job is gonna be a hell to do, it's very tight space to do anything.

Finally, someone that speaks from experience with that shity EGR on a N43 engine!

Big thanks to Haug530d for your time! Good to hear that I dont need to fully drain the coolant, what a stupid engineer did put a coolant plug on that EGR ?!

Yeah I know its a very tight spot to repair that shit with no head removal so I will try it with almost all one. I did found one on youtube that managed it as well but said he needed around 4 hours for that shit !

Probably the same enginer putting the timing chain on the back of N47/N57 engines :P

If it's a manual transmission is quicker to pop the gearbox out to gain access to the egr on N43
