I have a feeling there is an additional factor that is not totally clear:

I tried setting this up using dos commands, connectify and my public wifi. Each time I could see the virtual ap and connect from my mobile phone.

However my ICOM would never connect. It connects fine to my home router so I know ICOM is not faulty. Also when trying to connect the ICOM to the virtual AP, I could see the WiFi LED would change from blinking continually, to slower blinking, but it would never connect. I tried even using tftpd32 to provide DHCP for the virtual AP in case this was a problem, but I could not see the ICOM at all in wireshark traces.

I suspect this must be an incompatibility with my wifi card but the strange thing is it works perfectly if I try and connect my mobile phone to the virtual ap.
