in terms of step #6 - "Verify Current map is Road Map North American PREMIUM 2018-1.” :

Do you have to be running this current map version for this File/Map to work?

My car has the original factory map, and I would like to update it directly to 2019-1.

No it does not. 

you can update from an year to the latest. as long as you're in the same family, PREMIUM to PREMIUM, NEXT TO NEXT, etc.
