The BMW documentation clearly states that the sensor is only used for the seat belt warning light in the rest of the world and the airbags will always deploy. In the US the airbags won't deploy if it detected a child seat, otherwise it will always deploy.

In fact, you can retrofit chairs without the sensor in Mini, which uses the same sensors.
