XZBMW  BMW CIC - Convert: F series to E series CIC
So since it is hardware/software releated and on this subthread are much more people than in hardware i opened it here too. So, how about it ? Any opinions ? Covert F series CIC device to be used in E series car.

Well purpise would be to put F series CIC in E series car, like you can do vice-versa, for example if you programm E series CIC with F series SW it will work in F series car, but other way its not possible due to lack of front panel connector. Im intrested if anyone has a solution for this ?

If pcb is the same it should have the spots to solder on the connector for front panel. But other issue Will a f series cic fit in a Exx dashboard? If i remember well Fxx cic's dvd layer sticks out of the front is this not o problem to fit it inside a Exx due lack of space?

Yes about dvd it is sticking out unlike e series, you are correct, however, its not just connector missing, there are some following logistics chips around it as well. But lets forget dvd tray for now, regarding front panel, i think of 2 soltuions currently:
1) solder on missing components and flash with e-serie software
2) make eNBT like CAN module which will send controls from front panel over to canbus so cic can receive and change wakeup mode from MOST to CAN.

Idk, i still have CIC device laying around so ill make few tests with it until NBTs come. But this is why im asking did anyone did this earlier, any experience ?

It's a good idea , i was wondering how to do it ,there are some f CIC units which fit exactly in E series but miss controles and wakeup mode via CAN
anyway it gonna need hardware emulator

  • FSC Patch CIC/NBT/EVO/ENAV2/MGU
  • Remove Component Protection EVO/ENAV2/MGU
  • VIRGIN KAFAS/RAM/ENAV2/EVO/MGU
  • VIRGIN EGS ZF / DCT
  • Secure Coding 2.0 Type Key, FA, SFA

Well i never opened a Fxx cic So No idea how it looks inside. Easyest way is a emulator i guess. If it is even possible to solder the missing components you also need to find them. And how to flash it? Ista/p won't do it i guess and i am wondering of winkfp recognizes the Fxx unit. I can try to put a Fxx cic on my Exx bench setup tuesday to see What happens and if it starts from can message or Did you try this already? Does the Fxx cic also have a wake up fdl coding?

Hardware emulator can be made for under $20 which will collect signals from panel and translate to CAN, and i have prg file to switch wakeup mode of IOC from MOST to CAN, however...

whats with the connector ? it has 2 digital input pins, 2 for serial, 1 for gnd, 1 for illumination.

digital inputs are pulled up and switched with GND, they are connected to eject and power-on buttons on the front panel and directly connected to IOC as interrupts to wake it up, serial also ends there, baud rate 38400...

and while we are on the subject, can anyone explain to me why that eNBT adapter costs so much ? It is only simple microcontroller with 2 can transciveres, 1 uart used and few digital IO pins...

Well that's way out of my knowledge. And about the costs it has always been the money. People want to be rich in a short period So that's why it costs So much i guess. I get the point that they want Some money for all the time they spend to make something and also the parts used cost something but they want always the max money for something...
