Battery Charger While Using SD Connect C4?
Hello - I'm new to CarTechnoloGY. I searched the forum but couldn't find answers to the following questions.

  1. Is it necessary to connect a battery charger to the car battery while running XENTRY diagnostics using a SD Connect C4? I want to run diagnostics on a 2013 MB E350 Wagon (S212).
  2. If a charger is required, what current capacity should the charger have? I own a Schumacher SC-1200A-CA SpeedCharge 12Amp 6/12V Fully Automatic Battery Charger. Would this suffice or do I need more than 12 Amps?
  3. If you are running diagnostics with the engine on, do you still need a battery charger to be connected? Or is a charger needed only if running diagnostics with the engine off?

1 - it is necessary to connect a battery charger
2 - i bought a charger from ctek - https://www.ctek.com/de/products/pro/mxts-70-50
https://www.ctek.com/de/products/pro/mxs-25ec
both are excelent!
3 - if engine is off it is better to have a battery charger. if you are programming and the power cuts off it is expensive...

Mr.Moose - thanks for the response.

I just found this thread on another forum stating that it's fine to use a 2-3 Amp "Battery Tender" when running STAR diagnostics with a C3/C4 rather than a 25 Amp or 50 Amp charger (read posts 402 through 406.) Can anyone comment on whether a 2-3 Amp battery maintainer/tender would suffice for this purpose?

You have to make a difference between diagnosing and programming.
To diagnose your vehicle a simple battery charger will be good enough to keep your battery up till you will finish your diagnosing session (keep in mind that even if you will simply diagnose your vehicle, making some tests, will turn on the lights or ac or cooling fan/s which will deplete your battery if the tests will take long enough time), so, a decent battery charger (min10A) will help you.
If you will start programming ECUs on your car then forget about any regular battery charger. You will need a powerful voltage stabilizer which can provide at least 70A during this process. Failing to use this stabilizer will most likely ruin your ECUs during programming.
PS: if your tests will run with engine ON you will not need any charger at all, however, these tests are just a few and more likely, at some point, you will still need to turn OFF your engine and make different tests which will again need a charger connected.
TIP! : To avoid connecting-disconnecting the charger on your car during diagnosis better get a second spare fully charged battery connected in parallel with your main one with jump starting cables. Again, this is available just for DIAGNOSIS smile

Marcos - thanks for the detailed response. At this point, I only plan to run diagnostics. Therefore, the 12A charger I currently own (see my original post) should fit the bill. When I am ready to do programming, I'll be sure to get something like the CTEK MXTS 70/50 that Mr.Moose suggested. I will consider a spare fully-charged battery. Thanks for the tips.

At the following URL, you'll find BMW documents on the power supply specification for control unit flashing/programming etc.

http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showpos...stcount=20

Apparently, 14.2VDC @ 45 amps is sufficient for programming/flashing a BMW. Are there similar specs/documents from Mercedes-Benz?

Marcos - above you refer to at least 75 Amp power supply/stabilizer for a Mercedes. Is this from experience or could you point to a Mercedes document specifying this requirement?

That document on BMW reference is dated 10 years ago mate. Meanwhile car evolved a lot and they are full with electronics. Go figure.

Good point. Thanks Marcos.

I just purchased the following 75 Amp power supply. It is the most affordable power supply I could find.

http://powermaxconverters.com/product/pmbc-12-volt/

I purchased the adjustable version that allows you to switch between power supply and battery charger modes. And it has an adjustable output voltage (12.5 - 16.5 V).

Seems like you did a great selection. Enjoy it.
