XZBMW  BMW iRAP Session. Information
Good evening people!

This is just to satisfy my curiousitu really, but since I know there are many members here that work at bmw dealers maybe you can shed some light on this.

When dealers get stuck on a vehicle they can request an Irap session from technical support. But what exactly is the irap? Is it just a remote access protocol to let TS connect to your workshop network? And how do they perform work on the car? With a remote ista client with “admin” privileges? Or do they use for instance Esys?

When an session is started, can the local workshop tech see anything that is being done to the vehicle? Or is it just staring at a “blank” screen?

And on another note, if they don’t use esys, who does? Except us of course. I’m talking in official matters. Who did ESG develop esys for?

Thanks for any insight on his smile

Any info on this which is relevant will be rewarded with virtual beer money.

RE: BMW iRAP Session. Information
they use FASTA to pinpoint errors in diagnostic process, as more data gets transferred.

yes for remote support (programming/coding) they are using esys for newer and standart tools for older cars.

there is a client "IRAPnext" where they remotely connect to the ICOM on the car. the technician can't see whats going on

Ok thanks a lot! So basically the irap is a fancy team viewer with vpn for icom allocation?
Do they really use standard tools (ncs expert / winkfp etc) still? That’s pretty cool actually.

I tried asking my local dealer foreman but he could not tell me any in-depth information about the works of irap.

RE: BMW iRAP Session. Information
yes, like a fancy teamviewer, dealer connects and locks ICOM and sends information over PuMA for login.

these days, mostly use IRAP to flash software patches to known problems which aren't in the official release yet or try to fix software crashes etc...

RE: BMW iRAP Session. Information
I would not describe IRAP as alike to TeamViewer, it's more of an interface to share your ICOM over the internet, pretty much the same as what BMWAi ESYSNAT does.

This is how it looks:-
