XZBMW  BMW E82 cluster keeps mileage even after erase
Hi everybody,

I have something weird going on with a cluster out of an 2009 E82 135i.
HW 25
SW 89.45.80
080D0WQ EEPROM

I've ordered the cluster of eBay but when it arrived it appeared to have a higher mileage then advertised.
I've ordered it for a customer and was going to delete the VIN out of it to be able to recode it to the new car, but since it arrived with a higher mileage then the car it will be put into i also need to erase or lower the mileage.
When i plug it into 12v power supply and click the button on the cluster it shows 95658 miles.

So i've tried to read the 080D0WQ in-circuit with my R270 and a SOP8/SOIC8 test clip.
It reads just fine but what's awkward is that the first 2 lines (0x0000 to 0x001F) are already all filled with 00.
So i went ahead and wrote the dump back with the short VIN erased (somewhere in the 0x002E0 offset, all bytes set to FF) but it still shows 95658 miles when plugged into the bench power supply.

Then i tried to use the 080d0wq functions of the R270 software to delete the mileage.
After writing it still shows all 00 on the first two lines and the R270 software reports a mileage of 0KM, the cluster however still shows it's old mileage.
Then i tried to write a mileage of 100KM to the cluster using the 80d0wq functions of the software.
The software adjusts the first two lines of the dump to reflect a mileage of 100KM and starts writing.
It only writes the first 32 bytes, then begins the verify which failed with an error.
After reading the EEPROM after this attempt it still shows all 00 in the first two lines and shows 95658 miles on the cluster itself.

So my question is if i code the cluster to the car, will it assume this higher mileage to the car or will the cluster assume the lower mileage of the car?
If the answer to that is that the car will assume the higher mileage, how should i clear or lower the mileage of the cluster before installing it?

Do i need to desolder the eeprom to be able to write the mileage correctly?
Do i need to buy a new blank 080d0wq EEPROM and program the virginised dump to it and then solder it to the cluster?

I just think it's very weird that the cluster still shows a mileage even though it seems to be erased out of the eeprom.

I just want some clarity on this, i don't want to upset my customer by installing this cluster and then having his CAS and DME pull the higher mileage of the cluster in it which would be a mess to try to reverse that can be avoided in the first place.

Any help is very appreciated! biggrin
Thanks!

sound like eeprom courupted ...I think you cant reach corect data with clip, those chips are litle bit complicated so best way is remove chip from board and do on programer directly..now you can try erase complete chip first and than write first backup you made before or post cluster no. I will send u corect dump..must work !

Thanks for your quick response! I will desolder it and try to program it directly on the programmer.
If my original dump doesn't work i'll let you know wink
If it does work i'll let you know too biggrin

And what do you mean by cluster no. ?
Do you mean the BMW part number, ZB number,...?

BMW part no. is 62 10 9 187 045
ZB-NR on the sticker of the cluster is 9 187 045-02

can you please send me your working dump for this cluster in case my first dump doesn't work?

Thanks! thumbsup

RE: BMW E82 cluster keeps mileage even after erase
It’s solved biggrin

I desoldered the chip from the board and tried once more.
You were right, the eeprom got corrupted while trying to write the mileage with a test clip.
If i tried to zero the mileage it would get corrupted.
So i’ve edited the original dump i made with the test clip to erase the vin.
Next i’ve used the R270 functions to write a mileage of 100km’s.
That seemed to work!
I resoldered the eeprom to the board and it shows 96km’s when reading with the r270 and the cluster now shows 57 miles.

I’m going to install it tomorrow but it should all go well.
