My flash drive also has NTFS format. The head unit accepts a USB flash drive formatted NTFS. The reason probably in the hard disk of the head unit. The hard drive in the head unit is the same as in laptops, but they do not live long, especially in a car.
Did you solve your problem? I know what is not so easy, but you can change the hard drive to SSD.
BMW ConnectedDrive did not answer me on email. BMW ConnectedDrive support as always ignores user messages.

Today installed again. Use samsung 64gb usb 3.1 flash drive exFAT formated, 52 minutes installing. Everything is ok.

mirelino2000 Faulty hard drive in head unit problem, you need to change hard drives in your head units.
