XZBMW  Reverting ECU firmware back to factory default version
Hi there,
Recently I've got my old N52K's (it's 3.0L E84 indexed 25i) software updated to the latest firmware at a local dealership.

Technicians said the ECUs have never been updated since being manufactured so they've got them updated with the latest software (the last version was released in 2016 to my knowledge).

You know what? It ruined all B's M's and left only W from the car: it now performs like an old rusted wagon. No acceleration at all.

It seems that new software changed mapping in a goal to limit pollutions and increase mileage. The consumtion dropped a little. But performace received a HUGE degradation: acceleration now seems to increase logarithmically as revolutions increase slowly when you tap the gas pedal.

It all feels like if the car now always advances the gear up striving to increase fuel economy and save on emissions. You floor the gas and the car accelerates like if it were doing to do that on the 3rd gear.

The dealershop said there's no official way to revert the firmware. Does anyone know if it's technically possible to revert the firmware?

Thanks in advance.

Okay, thanks.

Guys, if there's anyone in the location of Saint - Petersburg, Russia, plz contact me. I am not in the mood of quirking my DME so I'd prefer a professional to do that. Thanks.

If it's also possible to do the downgrade remotely, please also contact me here via PM so we could settle the costs.

The upgrade likely changes the valvetronic settings a little, setting it at a different angle to prevent wear. I don't think it has anything to do with economy, or intentional power loss. It was to make sure you don't damage your eccentric shaft over time.

Possibly previous updates had dramatic changes in how valvetronic work? I did NOT update any of my cars before.

I have two atmospheric E84 (one on N46 and another on N52K) and both feel VERY sluggish on acceleration since being updated. I can't think of anything else but the firmware... If that were just a single car, I'd consider something with valvetronics. But both cars? The dealership had firmware updated after changing the cylinder head cover (11127552281) when the old one started to leak oil. Profile gaskets are said to be fine and no oil leakage is visible. So I started to blame software upgrade (2K16 is known by diesel gate so N52K is the perfect candidate to be patched to get it enviroment friendly).

Drove my wife's N46 while mine was in the shop (I requested valvetronics to be checked at the dealership and they told me the angles are okay) and felt like N46 is just standind still on pushing the gas. Never had experienced this before, it felt so bad. Previously I remember seeing it revving up to 6,000 rpms. Now it's not even close. Both cars are now sluggish and their revs change from 2,500 to 4,000 all the time not even reaching 6,000 or 6,500 at almost any time.

Just hoping it is the firmware not the engines themselves. Not feels like being simply a coincidence. I was hoping reverting software would help. Now that you told me that upgrading the DME is not the case, it started to feel even worse.

I think the change to valvetronic affects on how the car exhausts gas and thus pollutes the environment. It's also maybe the update adds changes to the gearbox forcing it to select higher gears. Just my layman's assumptions here.

Here's the video from another engine but it very closely resemles my experience: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VfG3Z1MobWo
For a 40,000 mile engine I don't think the engine is dead now.

What are your suggestions?
