On the old firmware, I think you can burn the maps to DL-DVD and get it to work. Wasn't the issue only for USB updates?
Upgrading the CIC requires ICOM A+B Most adapter, expensive tools or a trip to a shop.

first check copy of premium map which are you trying to update. change pendrive to other type.. try again.

the update of cic it's not required for new maps.test with unplug usb, manually reboot the headunit and after that plug the usb and try again.

many moons ago when I got my e63 to update map it wouldn't so I got a bmw tech guy who popped round and plugged his laptop in and opened the port (USB) . then the update went smoothly . can someone elaborate on how to open glove box usb port ?

Okay so someone's pointed out to me that i'm probably going to need to make less of jump i.e I'll need to update from 2010 to 2013/2014 then go to 2019. I'm happy to give this a go but how do I download 2013 OR 2014? I can't find any links anywhere.

When i bought my F11 in 2016 there were the maps from 2011 installed and the dealer made a direct update to 2016. So i think an interim update is not necessary. If update via usb fails i would suggest, like said before, to update via DVD.

Just tried updating to 2017-1 and it said the same thing. Failed at around 94%.. Pretty certain the iDrive needs to be updated however I have no idea how to do this..

Updating requires an ICOM A+B, about $1000 for genuine set. It must be flashed via fiber optic bus, nothing less will work. If you have INPA and a basic cable, you could check the software date on the CIC.

Have you tried to update maps via DVD?

After finding out i'm running West Europe 2010 Maps, i've been pretty keen to update it to 2018 or 2019 ideally. I used an FSC generator which worked well. I tried the 2019-1 1 x USB update first and that failed at around 80% and came up with a message saying "USB Device with Navigation data is unreadable. Continue update?"


I then thought it's probably the new maps firmware. I downloaded a 3 x USB West Europe 2018-1 update, plugged the first USB in, read and started applying update fine. Prompted me to insert 2nd USB, continued fine and then finally prompted me to insert the 3rd USB which I did. Got to 88.8% and it failed and came up with the same message as before "USB Device with Navigation data is unreadable. Continue update?"

I then thought maybe the actual iDrive version is outdated. Went to BMW's website and downloaded the latest version and it told me I was running the most up to date version already. 

I'm 99% sure it's not the USB because it read all the files fine and continued to ask me for USB 1, 2 & 3. Anyone else had this problem before? Any suggestions? Any help would be hugely appreciated.

Here's what i'm doing:

1) Plugging in blank USB with that lets me pull the 1b.hex file off the car
2) Open FCS generator, load the 1b.hex file and enter the other information and click generate
3) Enter the FSC code which was accepted
4) Load USB1, 2 & 3 onto the USB. Replacing the files in the subfolder to the root each time it requests a USB change.

That's where it gets to 88% and say's the USB device with Navigation data is unreadable
