RE: VIN Decoder Webserver source
(15-02-2019, 08:16 AM)Kri Wrote: guy`s, thats exactly what is just wrote, that i already know this informationIt is indeed just a serial number. In VIN7, only the first letter means something. It's the code of the manufacturing plant. It used to be just letters, but now numbers are also used, like 7 for Leipzig or 8 for SLP. The next position can be a number or a letter, then the remaining five can only be numbers, and these six positions together are more or less arbitrary. BMW used to allocate them in large blocks sized from 500 up to several thousand, with the goal of having the VINs for the same model to be sequential, and each newly allocated block would follow the previous one if you sorted them alphabetically. But over the last several years that system gradually fell apart. Now BMW allocates smaller but more numerous blocks per model, so you will find the VINs for a given model spread far across the whole namespace, and Leipzig has abandoned the old system of block allocation altogether, so if VIN7 starts with the number 7, each new car gets the next number in sequence regardless of its model. |
