X5 E70 Active steering fault. AL low voltage error
I am trying to repair an X5 E70 with active steering and EHC. Car had rear impact from what am told and came with EHC in transport mode. I found the wiring between EHC unit and height sensors was faulty. Rewired from EHC to each sensor. Car xame out of the transport mode but still insisted height sensors were faulty. Replacing the sensors and EHC did not help.
Car was in use for a week then a bigger "ding" error. Ocurred. Now it flags DSC, EMF, EHC and AL. DSC errors are interface errors. One error in particular caught my attention. 6146 AL control unit cannot change to active mode, under voltage. Called up ecu functions, AL unit receives correct voltage and its internal voltage is correct. Checked terminal 15WUP, has pulsing voltage, on off, on off. Am not sure if it should be steady voltage but other ECUs waking up ok. Am lost what could be the issue. Test plan suggests check on power supply, connectors, ptcan, fcan. Planning to replace active steering unit and see. Any ideas? |

If it had impact to the rear end, check power cabling from the battery and battery itself?

Did you check all earth connections? Also the earth pin for the AL. Both on chassis and at connector for AL. Been seen a couple of x5 and x6 with corroded earth connections in the enginebay.

Been seen a couple of x5 and x6 with corroded earth connections in the enginebay. I will check this. But callin up ECU functions and checking voltage from within AL shows 12.3volts, same as battery voltage. Goes to 14volts with engine running. So it seems voltage is ok but will double check. |

RE: X5 E70 Active steering fault. AL low voltage error
Well, found a solution. I noticed when i disconnect the steering rack the fault would disappear. So i figured AL was referring to test voltage. It sends a test voltage on startup, but if any of the rack sensors does not report back properly it pops the voltage error.
Strange BMW did not have a more comprehensive procedure. They send you on a wild goose chase to check cas, dme, ptcan e.t.c Got a used rack, installed, all good! |

RE: (Solved) X5 E70 Active steering fault. AL low voltage error
The test plan I had followed
"All traction warnings appeared. Main fault is this mode change problem. Test plan suggests the following 1. Voltage - i have checked and double checked 2. Pt- can - all ok, bus is alive 3. F- can - seems ok, bus alive 4. DME - replaced 5. CAS- replaced 6. AL module - replaced In ista there is suggestion to change supply lines to 6mm2 wires but they are already huge! Any ideas? Steering angle sensors seems ok and passes the test in active steering initialization, but final step where we turn lock to lock goes on indefinately. Any suggestions? |
