17 digits VIN only for vehicle with 20 pins "round connector",
My 2004 e46, 2003 e39 and 2007 e83 vehicle with OBD connector only it's reading fine.

To complete the topic I would like to say that ICOM works great, I tested it on several different E83 / E39 / E46 and everything is OK.

Apparently the specific car mentioned in the first post was problematic.
