That interface is ..... no comment. i would not bother to upgrade that one honest when for 15$ you can get a really really good hardware, i may say the best in clones, the ones that are HERE, HERE and HERE for examples

Compare that with what you have and then tell me if you would like to bother with yours

I am looking for help to repair my VAG 11.11.0 tool (with ATMEGA162, GAL16V8B, 93C56WP, FT232BL, MCP2515, TJA1050).

Will the collection I downloaded help me do that ?
If yes, which files do I need ?

******* VIRUS ALERT *******

i could not install "VCDS-Release-11.11.5-Installer English 512bits.exe" as I kept getting irsetup sharing violation. I turned off AVAST Virus protection temporarily (and while NOT connect to the internet).
The install went fine expect at the last minute, Avast alerts that VCDS.EXE has win32:Malware Gen.

Its the same for "VCDS-Release-12.12.0-Installer English 512bits.exe".

Tried to do the same on another CLEAN pc, got the same problem -- the installer is hiding a Malware.

Both running Win XP.

Its a false alert
Before installing the vcds software please disabke tge Antivirus. Put the C:\Ross-Tech folder in Exception of Antivirus
Then install the VCDS softwsre
Reboot and then enable your Antivirus

BTW, I have soldered the 4 wires to the Atmeg162 and built a parallel port adapter for PonyProb2000 to flash the ATmeg162.

But before I do, I wanted to read the contents (Flash and the EEPROM).
But every time I read the device, I get the same dump which does not look right.

It looks corrupted.
Is there something wrong with my wiring or does the ATmeg162 not allow a read ?

Atmega162 its protected mate that's why your dump is corrupted.
Do you thing tgat chinese or ross-tech or anyone let the Atmega162 unprotected to be read it with an AVR programmer?
So you cannot backup your tool ( at least in this way )

OK Thanks Marty I got it now.

I thought that might be the case but was not sure if my wiring was at fault.

So it seems it's OK to re-flash it (I gonna use PonyProg).

What's not clear to me is the order of re-flashing.

Do I do it in this order ? :
1. Erase the device
2. program the Flash
3. program the eprom
4. write the fuse, lock and security bits
