turn reverse clock to unscrew the valvetronic
You need ISTA to calibrate the replacement

Do I need to get the engine out of the car to do this? Also, does valve cover need to come off to do this job? I watched some videos for other enginers, where the eccentic shaft is turned manually and low/high limit stops are removed before getting the valvetronic motor can be removed. Can't find much information on N63 though.

Bmw manual says remove front axle with engine and transmission 
 
Tight torque is 8Nm for the motor and you need to change the seal
