Correct, the black bmwscanner connector looks like it uses a ftdi serial chip to connect to the laptop/computer.
From your picture it looks like you dont have your scanner module plugged into the car. |

You are using the bmwscnner connecter box (not a usb K-Dcan) lead right? this one..... Not this one
