Ive just recieved a RNS510 B Revision so an older unit,  which has x2 problems, 1st the touchscreen isn't functioning, not sure if this has just failed or if the previous owner has attempted firmware update and failed, and second problem is that the h/drive is not seemingly being recognised, Ive used MRM 7.18 and can access all its functions, but in factory info on MRM readout everything shows fine, except the h/drive, it gives hard drive firmware err, and h/drive model err, this is with stock h/drive, and ive also tried another pata ide h/drive from a toughbook, which was formatted and no partitions, is there anything that would stop the system seeing the drive? and im assuming that because of the h/drive not being visible to the system I cant get firmware to load?        any advice would be great

thanks, just check for bad sectors ect?
and then how would i proceed if the h/drive looks fine when checking via pc?

Well further on this problem.

I've since fixed the touchscreen, then the HDD problem is apparently a common problem. Tiny SMD resistors at the HDD connector along very edge of the board can get knocked from board during removal of the mainboard, although mine are still all in place, but these resistors can also blow easy causing the system to not see the HDD, causing the 255 error if doing a firmware update. So had resistors checked, 1x was bad, replaced, now HDD is seen, and firmware update was able to complete.
resistor values were provided by a very kind user over at digital kaos forum, which helped me vastly to get the unit working, hope this info can help someone with same problem 
Unit is fully functional now.

Correct, I discovered that many years ago, the problem lies in the resistances of the lever and when it goes to format the disk, it gives an error, they are checked with a multimeter and values are measured.....
