Hi - My 2017 Mini F45 does not require a brake press to start engine. Ignition seems to be always on as press ignition knob and car starts immediately no brake press and no ignition on state. The car is new to me, is this normal? My other Mini 2016 F55 first press ignition on, second press start if brake pressed. Can anybody help?

Maybe the immo is off ?

What kind of car are we talking about? F45 is BMW 2-series, not Mini.

Assuming it's an F56 Mini with an automatic gearbox, I don't think it has anything to do with immo off, since that would be programmed in the DME. The BDM / FEM controls the starter motor, so I guess it is either coded very strangely or your brake light switch is defect. Do your brake lights work?

Normally, when you press the brakes you don't need to turn on ignition first by the way, but if you do not press the brake you can switch ignition on. So the behavior you describe is what one would expect if the brake is pressed.

Hi Sorry typo its an F54 Mini Cooper Clubman S 2017. Brake lights are working. Car will start engine on first press of ignition switch no foot on brake pedal. Its like I cant turn ignition on without starting the engine. ...

Disclaimer: Not familiar with this car.

There may be more than one circuit in the brake switch, just because the lights are working doesn't mean the switch is good. It could also have another switch for the start circuit.

They rarely run the same circuit for more than one function.

You need a good wiring diagram and trace down the brake switch that affects the starting circuit.

Not sure how faulty switch would affect this unless its stuck closed? Is this possible? Mmm maybe, I check?

As its 2017 model it should be still under warranty I would advise you to go see your nearest dealer and they should be able to check for you and, if there is any fault they should be able to fix it for free...............

Ah OK of course! This Mini is insurance write off so I don't want to take it there till fixed. I found issue with magnet brake switch on brake pedal. Clicked it a bit closer to pedal shaft and Voila, works as designed.
