you did not experience component protection, it was region lock (when screen goes black).

Thank you for clarification, but isn't this what @zygi898 will experience once he flashes MGU with ECE TS ?

Component protection rejects all FSCs from head unit, region lock turns off the head unit, you can easily code back the region in CAFD to US after flashing and the issue will be gone.

Evo units has a patch for that, MGU unfortunately does not have this yet.

MGU Patching/Virginizing.
Feature Installer codes.
Physical NBT EVO Repairs.
CarPlay activations.

All in all to enjoy ECE map he needs to get FSC for BMW, then proceed with flash.

RE: G20 US > ECE converion
No, flash (type code us-> ece) without FSC then optionally can upload FSC.
The unit update is primarily to get the language menu and the navigation voice.

Dude, just do it. Many users said it's safe. Those users have a lot of experience - You can find it on forum.
Those people who said that this is not safe never did this so how would they know ?

It is safe! I only had two times where flash did not worked with ece typecode - but NO brick! then flash again with us typecode but change FA before which includes all Speech/Language SA's for ECE car.
