XZBMW  Script or Utility to grab VIN?
I'm working through a couple of scripts on my laptop to streamline things around the workshop -- and more importantly, to expand my knowledge!

Without using ISTA or standard tools, I am looking for a script or utility that can grab the VIN and dump it into a file or onto the Windows clipboard.

We use ICOM, so assume that the ICOM will be locked with iTool Radar or similar before the script it run.  It needs to be a quick and easy way of grabbing the VIN.

Any pointers appreciated - even if it means writing code to achieve the end result.

ENET and ZGW_SEARCH.exe + MSWINSCK.OCX from C:\EDIABAS\Hardware\ENET.
  • That will grab VIN and vehicle IP

RE: Script or Utility to grab VIN?
First you need to define whether you need this to work for E series. For F+ you already have a couple of options offered. But why not go the route of getting a key reader and reading that info from the car key? Then you have additional info capability like service intervals, etc.

RE: Script or Utility to grab VIN?
Yes, thanks everyone for the inputs.

Already got key reader in the office.

I have my own database which I keep notes of everything I do ... also from a programming background, so partly curiosity too.

When I book in vehicles, I take customer details etc and mileage of vehicle, VRN etc. This links in to generating invoices later on and other nerdy things. I also do mobile diagnostics, so not go the key reader with me and pure laziness, OCD and the lust for attention to detail made me wonder if I could incorporate this into my wacky world.

Whilst I found ZGW, it seemingly didn't behave today on a G series car. Think it is because the ICOM was on a different IP addy to the one that ZGW expects. Maybe not .. I shall continue to play and thanks for anyone else who can chime in on this one.
