E60 Engine Swap VO issue
HI there,
I want to thank you everyone who helped me on here on the engine swaps, I have a E60 with S85 to N54 swap, it has been running great physically, since the swap, I transplant the engine/MSD81 to the donor car with everything else remain attached, one issue I have is that the OBD port will only work with K-CAN/D-CAN cable, dongle such as Thor , when I plug in regular OBDII reader for emission, it will not connect, so knowing the pin 6 &14 works (verified) to KGM (PT-CAN and K-CAN) , I know the network is working, however I have a feeling that the DME not shaking hand with the OBD reader 0x78 with a required respond. As I was going through the MSD80 option on NCSDummy, I noticed one of the option is the communication protocol, but I can't seem to locate the 62MOT module pop up, VO is not correct ( I don't see an option for engine ) , however the coding for CAS were selected N54U30 , I also noticed when I connect ISTA to the car, it still shows the S85 chassis and not the N54 engine. Anyways, , I just want to have the option to connect to the OBDII reader , can someone shed light on what I have done wrong? and how to correct it? |

RE: E60 Engine Swap VO issue
Hello. you need to change the power class in CAS
After all this, you still have many problems ahead of you. Transmission, suspension, chassis. |

RE: E60 Engine Swap VO issue
You are right, it wasn't a easy but satisfying when I got it rolling. It has been driven for 23k miles already and still running strong. I am trying to get ready for the OBDII emission and I was just hoping if 6MOT pop up , I can play around different setting to get it to work. I tried to change the Power Class to Invalid, werz_1 and werz_2, the 6MOT not poping up in the NCSexpert? well My intention is to get the Generic OBDII scanner to read the DME with emission stuff, any other way? I am also curious in The NCSExpert Work folder, there is a ASW file that spell out the Car Spec, may I ask how I can update that to reflect the correct engine code?

RE: E60 Engine Swap VO issue
Essentially you need to change the vehicle type to a 535i VO from 2008-2009 and write in new VO.
I don't think this is what will fix your CANBUS vs. K-line OBD diag however. |

RE: E60 Engine Swap VO issue
I don't think it is the physical communication layer as the module talks to each other through KGM and I read all module through obd2 port , just I can't use a OBDii reader to respond the PID 0x78 request. My logic was that if I get the 6MOT shows up , I have an option to change the communication protocol for one of the option in NC Expert. Do you think this is the right path?
The factory build is after 09/07+ , the KGM module has the same pn as well as the firmware for the 535i , I was looking at the OBDII port, K-line ( if not mistaken should be pin 7) is not there, so I know it is CAN pin6 & 14 only. |

RE: E60 Engine Swap VO issue
you tried a different OBD2 scanner to verify its not your scanner? your scanner detects CAN vs ISO correctly?

RE: E60 Engine Swap VO issue
clear working hours in dme and recode the dme. this will fix obd2 communication in generic mode as long as CAS vo is set up properly.

Be sure to replace the power class and the sign of the car in CAS. Write all this in VO, the E60 with the N 54 engine was only on the market in America, and only in restyling. And the car will have to be encoded with this feature. |
