XZBMW  Bmw E60 thinks key is in keyslot even when removed
My E60 always thinks a key is inserted in the keyslot. I have replaced the keyslot, the ribbon cable, and the start switch, I’ve reset the CAS, replaced the battery, and tried resetting all modules by removing the negative battery terminal with no luck. Do I have a bad CAS or are there other things that can cause this? I’ve verified with INPA that the CAS thinks a key is inserted even when it is not.

I don’t have comfort access, car is a 2008 so LCI if it matters.

It also seems to prevent the car from going to sleep, if I lock it from outside the radio and cluster stay on.

You need to check the voltage on the 15WUP wire.

I'd also say the CAS. Try swapping it out maybe for a temp one that you can return, if it turns out not to be the CAS.

The car had been in my garage for a while as I had been doing some other work on it and hadn’t been driven — Going for a drive appears to have solved the problem.

RE: Bmw E60 thinks key is in keyslot even when removed
Ah, so driving it around would let me shut the car off right when I got back, but when I put the key in again it would lock it and not let me remove it. I figured out the real issue though!

This E60 is a drift car, it has the wisefab angle kit for an E90 installed in the front, modified to fit the E60. I used the E90 wheel speed sensors and changed the connectors to fit E60, and here lies the problem. They were sending bogus signals to the DSC making the car think it is in motion when it is stopped, which causes all sorts of weird behavior because the CAS won’t let you remove the key or let the car go to sleep if it is moving. I disconnected the sensors and immediately problem went away. I will have to figure out how to adapt the E60 sensors to the wisefab knuckle.
