I never had this problem but I heared about it, this time it happened to me on a unit from 01/2010 with 8gb.
The map update to 2019 stopped at 77,9% and he can´t read the usb to continue.

My BMW dealers say its a software version (i-level) problem, which I can´t believe.

I also know it is possible to delete the maps via tool32 or telnet command.

With tool32 it is "steuern_navi_map" and arg. "0x01", is this correct?
Also there´s a nand repair command, can I use this one too?

If this works, can I at least update the maps to 2014?

I hope you can help me.

I have now same problem on E90 2009/09 with original map from 2009.  tried update maps to 2023 now and stopped at 77,6% and cannot read from USB. 
How did you solve that?

I finally solved it with update to 2023 EAST. 
So West is not possible update to newer like 2018? even after firmware update?

no, sdcard is to small, devices starting from 2011 afaik. They have bigger sdcard for newer cards
