cranck, but no start problem with E87. need some help
Hi,
I have a sitiuation with E87 LCI 2009 116i 2.0L N43 manual The car cranks, but doesn`t start. it happened when I had to restart it in the car park. when it was recovered I have checked faults on ISTA and the only one was 2E85 , BSD, message: electric coolant pump: Missing I cleared it, tried to crank couple times, no luck, the 2E85 came back. the only fault was showing at that point. weak battery was showing some signs too. So I`ve replaced water coolant pump, 2E85 disappeared, but car still doesn`t start. recharged the battery too just in case. now the only faults I get are: 00A6CF JBE: AUC sensor 002EFE DME: Electric fan, activation but these faults were showing up on this car for ages ago, like a few years, so nothing new it can not be the reason anyway. all fuses checked and all`s good, tried to clone ECU (MSD 81.2), no changes after, fuel pump live data readings showing up 8 bars or so when I crank the crank, so should be ok. tried to unplug IBS sensor on the negative battery terminal, no luck. anyone have any ideas whats can be wrong with this E87? |

Crankshaft sensor? Maybe send wrong signal.

Sometimes not showing any DTC when sensor wrong.

IMHO 2009 is way too early to know that crank sensor is faulty. It sets that fault when crank sensor sends bogus signal. If it does not send ANY signal, then no fault.
Look at live engine rpm data. If 0 when cranking - definitely crank sensor. |

Have you done the basics?
1, Is there fuel being delivered to cylinders? Wet plugs 2. Is there a spark being generated. Only after checking these can we know what direction to go. Simple things first!!!! |

Like Node says usually faulty crankshaft sensor will not throw faulty message. Simply check for rpms while cranking

Sounds like the engine is flooded.

(22-04-2023, 19:55 PM)BmwMerc Wrote: Hi,Does the engine sound normal when cranking? I have had problem where loose timing chain can skip over the Cam gears and go mechanically out of time. If far enough out, the engine won't start. In my case the engine sounded strange when cranking / was popping back through the intake manifold. |

RE: cranck, but no start problem with E87. need some help
sorry, had many other things to do, but now back to my old car and "crank, no start" issue.
first of all thanks to everyone for the ideas. haven`t tested crankshaft sensor itself just yet, but when you crank the car rpm goes roughly to ~300 rpm on the dash. Also tested on INPA and live data shows the same 250-300 rpm during the cranking. So, logically the sensor should be ok as it can read the info. Fuse 16 checked as well as it is related to crankshaft sensor. And overall all fuses look ok. Also checked live data of fuel pump and looks like all is good there too. Tested with IBS connected and without. The battery is fully charged. No faults on the system at all except 2EFE DME: Electric fan, activation which is not related. Have tried DME full adaptation reset, CAS reset, ELV reset, etc. I know it can not sort the problem, but still did it. No changes. As I mentioned above tried to clone the ECU, didn`t work. Also DME has been flashed to the latest stock version too. P.S. One more thing to mention. The car is equipped with NOXEM and did it roughly 2-3 years ago. Just thinking maybe it can cause this problem. |
