E46 318i N42 Engine Flywheel timing locking hole
I am attempting to replace an N42 engine valve seals without removing the cylinder head. I am unable to locate the flywheel TDC locking pin. It is under the starter from what I read and from close proximity to alternator as shown in the ETK.
Is there any other way to reach it or lock flywheel in TDC in an easier way than having to remove the intake manifold? I think it will be impossible to get timing 100% without accessing that locking hole. |

No need to remove intake manifold...just raise vehicle, remove reinforcement plate underneath engine and you'll have enough space to plug in the locking pin in the flywheel.

Come to my aid I have been under that car for one hour and just cant find this pin location. Removed a small blanking plate and can also see fly wheel from drivers side. At TDC I see three holes on the flywheel but for the life of me cant just see how the locking pin should slot in. Ill try again. Is the pin slotted from engine side towards exhaust or from exhaust side towards engine? Is it on the passenger or drivers side of the flywheel on the lower quadrant I believe? If I locate this pin location my job will be done. I am using the dog leg pin from the timing tool set |

I found it. Very squeezed and hidden. Struggled to lock but failed. It must be a tight fit and lock tool too long. Will try again today with someone turning engine gently around tdc
