BMW E83 from 2010 - 41BA error - exhaust backpressure
Dear All,

Need an opinion please - I have started to find mentioned error 41BA constantly on my E83.
41BA - DDE: Exhaust backpressure sensor.
If in ISTA i go to details of the error - print screen enclosed.

charging pressure - 1035.29 mbar
ambient pressure - 1011.76 mbar
Exhaust backpressure onboard recirculating air filter - 1117.97 mbar

From my understanding it doesnt like this last parameter as per description - pressure before particulate filter too high - not plausible in relation to boost pressure and ambient pressure.

I have replaced the backpressure sensor (with OEM part) 2 times - i thought first one was defective from new.
Still that error appears.
Car has 173000km with no strange issues so far. Regenerations seems to works just fine - and from this I assume DPF is still in good state.
The pipe from DPF to backpressure sensor looks also good - no cracks or punctures on it.
Any idea what is causing this?

Many thanks,
paul

RE: BMW E83 from 2010 - 41BA error - exhaust backpressure
This is a readout with engine idle and according to the backpressure value the DPF appears somewhat full hence the resulting fault code. What is the readout with engine off? What is the peak readout under heavy acceleration?

If possible, perform 2-3 successive forced regenerations and follow the readouts to gain confidence that the DPF is indeed still in good shape. If not, I'd suggest to have it cleaned.

I did that backpressure test - idle rpm, 2000 rpm and 3900rpm - backpressure numbers were way under the max values mentioned in the test - i cant remember now but i will repeat it tomorrow just to have accurate figures.

Thank you!

Hello.

Vehicle mileage 173000km + engine hours!
Perform a service function - (Changing the particulate filter)
He may have run out of resources. Its resource is 250000 km.

RE: BMW E83 from 2010 - 41BA error - exhaust backpressure
That indicator is saying something like 80000km left - i may try to reset that like a virtual dpf replacement but not sure if that will help - i think is just deacreasing from 250000km to 0 while mileage is increasing.
I did today another regeneration - worked just fine.
Backpressure values:
engine off - 6 mbar - no idea why is not showing 0.
idle - 11-12 mbar
2000rpm - 24mbar
4000rpm - 75-85mbar.

i did read the values ista main screen -dde call up ecu function - read values something.
this was shown in most of the measures.
What i was surpsised is to see that sometimes at idle is showing negative oressure - which doesnt make sense in my mind but I dont know if it is "normal" or not. i never looked so close to backpressure values.
Is like sensor is having some inertia or delay when going abruptly rpms from cuttoff to idle - backpressure going first to -10 -15 mbar and then slowly increasing to around 10-15mbar ...
I will just go to to run another regeneration and again to look into values ...

many thanks,
paul

Disconnect the tube from the sensor then look at values again. Sounds like your tube is clogged/leaking. Or sensor wires damaged.

The DPF seems perfectly fine according to the latest backpressure values. Check the hose and the wiring before the connector as suggested by Node.

RE: BMW E83 from 2010 - 41BA error - exhaust backpressure
The metal pipe to the exhaust back pressure sensor blocks up and causes in accurate readings, remove the pipe and check to see if it’s blocked or restricted, also has the vehicle been mapped, does the turbo actuate correctly

Hello.
wrote you correctly (aspy39) - (Node)
remove the inlet tube, blow through it and the fitting that holds it, also blow it out. remove the backpressure sensor and blow it out too. values (minus) should not be. If that doesn't help, then just replace the sensor.
If I'm not mistaken at idle, the maximum allowable back pressure should be + 35mbr.
at 2000 rpm - not higher than +70mbr.
at 4000 rpm - no more than +200 mbr.
Negative values should not be!
your particulate filter is fine. (according to your testimony)

sorry, in your car the back pressure tube is non-removable.
it still needs to be cleaned and blown out.

RE: BMW E83 from 2010 - 41BA error - exhaust backpressure
Did another 2 regenerations in a row - both worked.
Same values and again yes, i have noticed some negative values.
Tomorrow i will remove that metal pipe and will check it and also the wires.
Sensor itself is new, previous was also new (I assumed that one is defective from new and i have replace it again) so - i would not buy a third one until i am not sure that this one is also defective. Both of them are BMW oem.

Thank you much all!
