Attempted using autologic scanner and had no luck connecting to DME. Verified power/data at port. Attempted to connect via K+DCan cable with adaptor to round port under hood and had no luck communicating with the DME. Any tips/tricks?

Use ICOM, it will work

For E31 you will need REAL hardware with both K&L lines. KDCan is too puny to support old ways

You probably need an ADS interface with a proper RS232 port on your laptop. Then it's INPA or DIS (which is a bit dreadful).

There is NO reason you can't use ICOM with INPA on E31. But yes, for ADS your need REAL com port (as in REAL hardware).

I didn't say you can't use an ICOM. In fact, I said that was the easy way.

But since he mentioned using a cable in his opening post, I thought it was worth it to elaborate on the ADS interface and the need for an RS232 port and the hassle of installing/using DIS

The iCom is working fine with 20 pin adapter on my 95 e36 325i either INPA or ISTA.
