I think, you need some hardware modification.

You must modify 2 bytes in FTD eeprom, this value depends on FTDI ID, look here http://garage-automotive.com/showthread....203&page=4.

As I said. The HQ clone is a chinese clone opcom v5 hardware
Only if you have an opcom v6 hardware you need modifications because of the MCU.
About what do you need to flash a normal clone to become a HQ one I cannot help you.

There is no unique flash. Each OP-COM has USB communication chip FTDI which is used to access the PIC MCU.
Each FTDI has a unique ID (stored either as FTDIChipID or as 4 bytes in non-modifiable EEPROM space).
HQ clone (protected solidly by Enigma Protector) has a protection checker that generates 2 bytes for a check from 4 bytes of FTDI ID.
You need to write those 2 bytes (unique for your hardware) to first 2 bytes of the user area of EEPROM.
The easiest solution is brute-force. You simply write all 65536 possible combinations until you get your device working with HQ clone software.
EEPROM should normally withstand that many writes, you just need to write a script that will automate the things .
Easy peasy
Ofc there are other solution too. You can emulate valid known FTDI ID using some hooks solution. Drawback is that Enigma Protector has strong native protection against this so HQ software will often detect the hooks.
You can also unpack HQ clone (bypass Enigma Protector protection and inner VM) and then find algorithm and figure it out in disassembler. This is ofc easier said than done.
And last but not least you can by "original" (I wonder if you notice oxymoron here ) HQ clone. However if you are not in Bulgaria/Romania but rest of EU or somewhere else, you would need to pay much (2-3 times) more than 100 Lev (50 Euros) what is the real price of HQ clone.

Out of interest, what is the easiest way to tell if you have a genuine or fake PIC18F458 as I've heard that fake PIC's can look like genuine ones? Thanks.

Just rumors I think
The opcom hardware make the difference.
The opcom v5 had allways original Pic MCU or at least one as original but you can upgade/downgrade the firmware
The opcom v6 had allways a fake Pic MCU ( no matter how is look like ) and this one its blocked if you try to upgrade or downgrade it
The newer designe has also an Pic MCU not fake ( till now as I heared )- I never had one of this tool in my hands
Anyway in all cases the fake MCU can be replaced with an original one
But yes its a lottery if you wanna buy a good tool with a good Pic MCU inside
You need to buy it from trustable sources if you wanna be 100% sure that you recive a real Pic18F458
