VPN is the right way.
For this connection you need a Router or a NAS with VPN server ISTA-D ISTA-P Standalone, Carly for BMW (official version)

You can either do VPN OR Edit Firewall Rule Allow Router #2(remote) IP_ADDRESS to access ICOM IP_ADDRESS Allow Router #2(remote) IP_ADDRESS To access ICOM PORT_NUMBER(S) If any of my posts or current one helps then don't forget to press thanks and add a reputation

Yes, VPN is an solution.
For coding, i think its better with DPD active. But you can forward the ports from your public IP to your static ICOM IP. If my post helped you hit the thanks and reputation button.

RE: [HELP] BMW Icom Online (remote) Connection
Hello, i want to reopen this thread. Anyone? I want to see remote ICOM connected to a car in my itoolradar at home.
Want use ISTA also for it and make some flashing. Internet is stable on both places (my PC and remote PC which is connected to ICOM and ICOM is connected to car). VPN is ok of course. Im using in my home Synology Router with working VPN. Both PC is connected to VPN - synology VPN. But i cant still see the ICOM in iToolRadar or ISTA. What else to do please? |

RE: [HELP] BMW Icom Online (remote) Connection
You won't see it. Unless you write software to operate as a kind of ICOM proxy on that remote computer. I did it once and it worked, but that should not be a question for flashing. The actual question should be WHY you would do that. In local flashing you have 3-4 components which could fail: computer, cable, ICOM, maybe router. In remote case you increase that number like 4-5 TIMES!
Flashing is risky as it is already. Is it worth risking thousands of euros in ECU replacement, if ANY component fails? |

RE: [HELP] BMW Icom Online (remote) Connection
Exactly as @Node said. Is this worth a risk to flash ECUs remotely and bother to recover it later or need to replace them? I would understand if you'd like to flash one module like ZGW which has no big size files, but let's say programming a whole car including long time programming HU? In my opinion it makes no sense to even try at all.

RE: [HELP] BMW Icom Online (remote) Connection
I have software that will allow you to see an ICOM remotely as if it were connected locally, Beta testing is underway, PM me to join, there is no charge or fee to join.
Flashing ECU's remotely is risky as Node and Matthew state but I have beta testers that have done this sucessfully even though we don't reccomend. Author of Car Connector - remote ICOM & ENET tool - Built in VPN for easy coding and remote diagnostics Closed Beta in progress - Open Beta starting Jan 2024. |
