I've got the parts for this project except for the new FRM, I have to pull the panel and check the hardware number to see if it needs to be replaced.

How did you create the new third CANbus? Is that terminating resistor in all of the LCI X3s, even ones without the all-around camera? It looks like the halogen X3 doesn't use K_CAN3 at all?

Anything else I should know before I go ahead? I think I have the wiring diagram changes figured out, but this will be the first time I flash an ECU and do any coding through E-Sys.

Is this terminator a part number that can be ordered separately and what is the part number of such terminating resistor? I'm on the way to retrofit Adaptive LED to a Pre LCI with Halogen too.

Can3 created by replacing ZGW which has it

no need terminator, you conect can3 to new ZGW

Each headlight has two pairs of CAN3, so it makes total of four wires per pair to connect to two CAN3 ZGW pins, so I guess is more appropriate to use terminating resistor like the original wiring, but what's the part number of it?

Wouldn't the replacement FRM have the CAN3 pins? What's the new ZGW for?

Oh man thank you so much, I could not track down what part that was. I actually ordered some resistors and a capacitor to try and make my own.

What year do you have? I'm trying with a 2016 28i. 

I've attached what I've figured out so far. I've still got a couple things left that I'm not sure about:

  1. Do I really need a new FRM? On this post about retrofitting LEDs in other F-chassis they say you need FRM3 61359273629 or newer, just post 9/11 production date. That should definitely be in mine, right? I mean from this thread it sounds like I definitely do, but it's strange that on other chassis the parts they need are older.
  2. I'm not trying to get the actual adaptive part of the LEDs working. I don't have a forward-facing camera which sounds like a requirement for that.
  3. Do I need a new ZGW too? Or if I do need the new FRM that's enough? And if I do, which one?
  4. I was concerned about the terminating resistor, but looks like that's sorted smile
  5. Do I really need to run power to the rear for 30/30F power, or can I tap something up front?

will try to explain about FRM, when they build the car they use parts for a certain vehicle with certain options. Like in UK you get 4 versions of F25: Halogen, Xenon, Adaptive Xenon and Full LED. factory put FRM corresponding to the each headlight system. Most basic is FRM for halogen and you cannot use it on Xenon headlights as it does not have outputs on some pin's (like xenon shutter), the FRM from xenon headlights will not work on adaptive as it missing AHL processing part, and AHL will not work on LED as it also missing LED module control part. However the LED FRM module can be used on all other headlight types as it has all necessary parts build in. When you buy a new replacement FRM module from a dealer they will give you a lates 'full' version FRM

note. on pre LCI F25 Xenon FRM same as AHL Xenon as it communicates trough the LIN.

The CAN3 connects to the ZGW , ZGW is your ROUTER on the car which controls all the signals. The FRM does not have CAN3 connection, CAN3 on ZGW gets converted in to CAN2 and sent to FRM and vice versa.

I have not looked at the diagram but i believe the pin11 and pin12 connect between the headlights and only pin 9 and pin10 in to the ZGW. No need for the terminating resistor, i never used it.

You can use relay harness from supply point for permanent live to the headlights, have done it once on F01 as there was no connections on distribution box.

Ahhh okay that makes WAY more sense. So I need to see if my ZGW has CAN3, and if it doesn't I need to get one that does.

Looks like my ZGW should be part 61359360344 or 61359380333 to work? (link - it's hard to tell which one should be right).

And here is the FRM page, you're saying that none of them will work except 61356992947?

Also thanks for the rest of the notes about the pins and supply lines, that's super helpful.

If your car is pre-lci then you won't have can3 on zgw. if i am not wrong the can3 comes only on ZGW2

When BMW build the car they assign different part number to FRM which will not show up on ETK. when i look on eBay to buy some i need to ask seller for a vin from which particular FRM was taken from to see if car had LED or Xenon headlights. However there are some people on this forum who know how to find out what FRM capable off by HW version on it. 
But when you buying a brand new from BMW they have only one part number, and that FRM will cover all the options - full  version.
