Can anyone point me where i can update my VCDS to code my 2017 Skoda Octavia? I believe it to be a chinese cable. If i update from the official route will i render this cable unusable?

Currently running 17.1. Believe i need 18.1.

Sorry i'm a complete noob can you elaborate? The cable claims to be a HEX-V2. Looks genuine apart from the chinese QC sticker.

When it looks like a Hex-V2 it doesn't mean that there is a Hex-V2 Hardware inside. This are always cosmetic issues at china. When there is a new Hardware on the market, there is also a bigger/better copy protection inside, because they already know that the old hardware was copied many times. So they only put the old Hardware in a newer case that people think it is a newer version and buy it again / from them.

Also a China cosmetic thing: You can buy a VAS6154 head in china (need for ODIS Win10), and inside is a patched VCXDiag VCX Nano which is also not known by the computer as VAS6154 rather known as VAS5054 which can not be used in Win10, also a good rip off!.

When the car is so new you only have 2-3 possibilities

- Buy original VCDS Hex-V2 Interface with 3 VIN Limitation
- Buy original VCP (without K Line) (most times description is missing or in polish language - china clone is to old to work 100% with your car!)
- Buy good VAS5054 Clone (with AMB2300 Chip) and try it with ODIS-S on Win7, but newer cars like yours can only be coded online over Guided Functions. You can code with Self Diagnostic the Adaption Channels and enable some things, but there you don't have proper description if you want to change the main long coding.

I think the cable works fine. But i need the latest version of VCDS for my new vehicle. Is that possible?

Failing that could you point me in the right direction of the cheapest working option. I don't mind spending money and learning what to do.

Here in picture you can check, why your Hex-V2 is not Hex-V2. Also you see on picture of a Hex-V2 must register in 14 uses, so this is the new clone protection, that after some uses you have to connect online and verify the cable.

In every country, there is a big community of the diagnostic tools on FB or on a extra board/forum with a user map, where you can contact users, and they code the car for you for some small $$.

Cheapest possibility depends on what you want to do and how much money you want to waste. I can also write expected prices.

On VCP, ODIS you can Flash Software
On ODIS, VCP, OBD Eleven you have guided functions
VCDS is good with descriptions when someone messed his whole codings
VCP is good with parametration data / eeprom edit when you retrofitted or broke something with an update or have to do US Car to EU Car. Also is the only diagnostic system who can do Video In Motion on newest MIB1 MIB2 Units like Amundsen, or Discover Pro.

I did not use OBD Eleven so you have to look on the site. Rumors I heard: You have to be online, not all Ecu's can be coded but most ones, Video In Motion on some Multimedia Units possible but messes eeprom, that you get 5 faults shown in Fault Code Memory. But many people use it and it should not be so bad.
