Thanks mate, much appreciated. I have a Pi that I use as a games emulator, I’ll have to try and work this out. Looking at that board, does the USB attach to the Pi? And the pins connect to setup? I’ve looked at the schematic and can’t work it out just yet. Looks like it’s time to start researching

No USB shield use SPI. You can use dupont wire to connect shield. I have attached a new link with better pictures check it out. There is more than one way to do the hack basic solder skills are enough to do it. Or you buy a compatible shield for raspberry pi (3,3 V GPIO) then no solder necessary.

Some really great info here. Would I be right in saying that a PiCan board would do the job without the fiddling about? Soldering etc?

That's right PiCan works plug and play without soldering etc.
